General Practitioner postpartum and newborn care

Postpartum & Newborn care

Avivo provides postpartum and newborn care to patients including circumcision, lactation/breastfeeding support and tongue tie assessment & release.

Circumcision

Circumcision is an optional surgical procedure for baby boys and is a personal decision for every family.

Dr. Karen Zwiers leads our circumcision practice. With over 20 years of experience in newborn care, Dr. Zwiers has performed thousands of circumcisions using the Mogen Clamp technique. Her clinic accepts newborns from birth to 8 weeks of age. Additional information about circumcision and what to expect during an appointment can be found here.

Please note: Referrals are not required for a circumcision, and it is recommended that appointments be booked as soon as possible following the delivery of your baby. Circumcision appointments can be booked by calling our clinic directly at (403) 289-8996.

Circumcision consultations are covered by Alberta Health Care; however, circumcision procedures are not.

Prenatal lactation/breastfeeding Appointments

Postpartum lactation/breastfeeding care

Breastfeeding is a choice. Breastfeeding offers many benefits for both you and your baby, but it can be daunting.

At Avivo, our General Practitioner (GP) Physicians who specialize in lactation offer both prenatal and postpartum lactation support.

Postpartum lactation support is available following the delivery of your baby. Patients may seek out postpartum lactation support for many reasons, including concerns with breastfeeding/latch, engorgement/blocked ducts/mastitis, pumping, nursing multiples, and feeding support after discharge from the NICU. Prenatal lactation support is available from 28 weeks of pregnancy until delivery, however most appointments are booked between weeks 32 and 37 of your pregnancy.

Please note: If you are a new parent and interested in postpartum lactation/breastfeeding care please call 403 289 8996.

Appointments with our General Practitioner (GP) Physicians who specialize in lactation are covered by Alberta Health Care.

Tongue tie assessment & release

Tongue ties are most often identified in infants because they can cause feeding difficulties.

Often times, tongue tie assessments are identified because a parent has sought support for breastfeeding. Our General Practitioner (GP) Physicians are able to assess and release tongue ties.

Please note: If you are a new parent and interested in tongue tie assessment and release please call 403 289 8996.

Appointments with our General Practitioner (GP) Physicians who can assess and release tongue ties are covered by Alberta Health Care.
